FBI Confirms Investigation into Bomb Threats
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that it is looking into possible bomb threats made against SpaceX’s Starbase facility near Boca Chica Beach in Brownsville, Texas. The threats, which specifically targeted a Starship rocket, have prompted a thorough examination by the FBI’s San Antonio field office in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies.
“While we are working to carefully vet and investigate the information we have received, we want to reiterate that the safety and security of the American people is the FBI’s highest concern,” the bureau said.
It is at least the second reported bomb threat against Starbase in recent weeks. A previous threat was made on December 27, involving a call to the Brownsville Police Department.
Witness Account Raises Alarm
The latest investigation was prompted by disturbing comments reported near the SpaceX launch site on Christmas Eve. A witness, Calvin Wehrle, encountered individuals who claimed they were in South Texas to attack Starship. Wehrle recounted the chilling interaction, saying, “I said something like, ‘What are y’all here for?’ and the driver said, ‘Oh, we’re here to blow (Starship) up’.”

Although the driver reportedly claimed to be joking, the incident was serious enough to warrant immediate attention from law enforcement agencies. The FBI, in conjunction with local authorities, is now conducting a careful examination of these threats to uphold public safety and explore the motivations behind these hostile acts.
SpaceX Operations Continue Amid Threats
Despite the ongoing investigation, SpaceX’s operations at Starbase appear to be continuing. Launches included a Falcon 9 launch on January 3 and a Starlink satellite launch on January 5. The next Starbase launch could occur as early as January 10 with a Starship test flight.
The threats come at a time when SpaceX, valued at $350 billion and with Elon Musk owning an estimated 42% stake, is facing various challenges. The company has encountered criticism and legal issues over environmental practices, including allegations of discharging wastewater without proper permits.
National Security Implications
The bomb threats against SpaceX’s Starbase are unfolding within a broader context of heightened national security concerns. The current climate is tense, with worries about “lone wolf” attackers and radicalized individuals posing potential threats to critical infrastructure and public safety.
In light of these threats, the FBI has emphasized the importance of public vigilance and reporting of suspicious behavior. The agency is working closely with law enforcement and private sector partners to address the threats and ensure the safety of American citizens.
