A family in Bristol, England, has been left devastated after their seven-year-old labradoodle, Bailey, had to be put down following a tragic incident involving an Amazon delivery. The beloved pet was reportedly struck by a parcel allegedly thrown by a driver, leading to severe injuries.
The box, which contained a pair of bulky Hush Puppies shoes, was said to have been thrown over the family’s gate, hitting Bailey and causing a fractured hip and leg. According to owner Rachel Belton, 46, the driver laughed and shrugged off the situation as the dog yelped in pain and dragged its leg indoors.
“I heard Bailey let out a terrible noise, like a scream,” Rachel said, recalling the July 2 incident. “My children rushed downstairs and Bailey limped onto the sofa. I asked the man, ‘What did you do to my dog?’ He just laughed and said he had put the parcel over the gate, but it was clear the package had been thrown.”
Bailey’s injuries required expensive surgery, and although the family raised £2,000 from an appeal, they were later informed the vet bills would total closer to £5,000. Unable to afford the full cost, the family made the heartbreaking decision to have Bailey put down.
“I will never forget my daughter screaming at the window as we took Bailey to be put to sleep,” Rachel shared.
The family claims that a neighbor witnessed the driver throwing the parcel at Bailey, and Rachel has since asked police to investigate the matter. She is also seeking damages from Amazon and their claims firm, ARC.
In response, an Amazon spokesperson stated: “We have very high standards for the delivery service providers we work with, and we’re investigating.”
The family continues to mourn the loss of their pet, and Rachel hopes to find accountability for what she describes as a careless and devastating incident.
