A father and son in Russia were tragically mauled to death by a massive bear that had rampaged through a village in the Primorsky region. The bear, believed to be either sick with rabies or injured, broke into their home in Luchegorsk and fatally attacked the pair, aged 87 and 56. This deadly incident followed a brutal attack the previous day in which the same bear killed 35 stray dogs at a nearby animal shelter.
The bear had entered the dog shelter during the night, tearing through the flimsy wooden fence and attacking the dogs, who were chained inside their kennels and unable to escape. Olga Zamyshlyaeva, the shelter director, reported finding bear tracks at the scene of the carnage, which left the local community in shock.
After the fatal attack on the father and son, police cordoned off the village and imposed a night curfew to protect terrified residents. Hunting inspectors were immediately deployed to track and kill the bear, which was feared to continue its rampage. Within hours, the animal was found and shot by authorities.
Bear expert Sergey Aramilev commented on the abnormal behavior of the bear, noting that healthy bears typically avoid populated areas and are not prone to such aggressive actions. He suggested that the bear was likely suffering from an illness, possibly rabies, or had been previously wounded by hunters, causing it to become more dangerous. The bear’s underweight condition further supported the theory that it was sick.
The horrific incident comes amid a growing number of bear attacks in different parts of the world. In Japan, residents of Hokkaido have been grappling with similar fears after a group of bears, referred to as “ninja bears,” began attacking humans and livestock. These bears have become infamous for their stealthy and deadly attacks, reigniting concerns over the threat posed by wild bears.
The tragic loss of the father and son has left the Luchegorsk community devastated, as they cope with the aftermath of the bear’s deadly rampage.
