A 32-year-old Maryland woman, Talecka Brown, is accused of shooting her 13-year-old daughter and then urging her to lie about the circumstances surrounding the incident. Brown remains in custody, facing serious charges in connection with the shooting that took place on Monday.
According to the Seat Pleasant Police Department, officers responded to Brown’s home at approximately 4:50 p.m. after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Brown’s daughter suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, later identified as a gunshot wound to the neck. The teen was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition.
Brown has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and the use of a firearm in a felony. She is currently being held without bond, and her preliminary court hearing is scheduled for October 25, according to online court records from Prince George’s County District Court.
Seat Pleasant Police Acting Chief Cedric Heyward expressed deep concern over the incident, stating, “It is always tragic when we have acts of violence within our community, but it is heart-wrenching when the perpetrator is supposed to be your protector. I am glad to hear that the victim is recovering at a local hospital, but the emotional trauma will remain for some time.”
Reports indicate that the altercation between Brown and her daughter began after the teen returned home from school. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation, and as the teen was walking down the stairs, she allegedly heard gunfire and collapsed. Brown is accused of instructing her daughter to falsely claim that an intruder was responsible for the shooting. At one point, Brown also blamed an unidentified homeless person for the incident.
Following her arrest, prosecutors raised concerns about Brown’s influence over her daughter, pointing to a phone call Brown allegedly made from jail. Authorities are worried that Brown may attempt to manipulate the teen as the case proceeds.
The case remains under investigation.
