Father’s Day is supposed to be a day of honor and celebration for the fathers and positive male role models in people’s lives, as well as spending valuable time with them. However, for former GOP candidate Nikki Haley, her Father’s Day was far from celebratory. On Sunday morning, the former Governor of South Carolina took to social media to announce the passing of her father, on Father’s Day.
This past Sunday, Haley took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce that she had to say goodbye to the “smartest, sweetest, kindest most decent man” the politician had ever known. Along with the heartfelt caption, the post included a picture of Haley and her father hugging one another. Haley stated that her heart is heavy after losing her father, especially on such a celebrated day. Haley’s father was Ajit Singh Randhawa, who was an immigrant from India to the United States. Once Randhawa had become a U.S. citizen, he landed the occupation of a professor at Vorhees University in Denmark, South Carolina. Haley continued her memorial post by stating that her father taught his children the importance of hard work, faith, and grace. The former GOP candidate praised her father for being a loving husband of 64 years to her mother, as well as a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. Haley concluded her post by wishing her father a happy Father’s Day, and that he would be missed dearly.
Haley’s father was able to witness his daughter announce her GOP presidential bid in 2023, where he was later diagnosed with cancer. In January, Haley paused her campaign to visit her father in the hospital. Nikki Haley is the former Governor of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017, as well as the former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from 2017 to 2018. In March Nikki Haley suspended her presidential campaign due to a failed Super Tuesday.
