Rep. Nancy Pelosi remarked on Sunday that paying attention to Rep. Matt Gaetz is pointless since he has no authority, power, or “sway” in the House.
Mrs. Pelosi remarked on CNN’s “State of the Union” that “You’re wasting your time on that person because he has no sway in the House of Representatives, except to get on TV and raise money on the internet.”
Florida Republican Rep. Gaetz boldly declared in the media that he would seek McCarthy’s ouster as House speaker this week. He claimed that “nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy” because the speaker had lied to President Biden and House conservatives.
Mrs. Pelosi told her fellow Democrats to “follow the leader,” Hakeem Jeffries, when CNN’s Jake Tapper asked what the Democrats should be doing. She stated he had done a terrific job the previous day; they had a victory in the continuing resolution. The former House speaker declared, “It was a defeat for the MAGAs.”
According to Pelosi, it would take 218 votes to oust Mr. McCarthy from his position. To win, Gaetz will certainly need Democratic backing. She said it is still unknown whether Gaetz had secured those votes.
She went on to attack Republicans for giving tax cuts to the wealthy and wanting to cut Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security, and benefits for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.
“It’s not about the budget,” she said. “It’s about a values debate.”
McCarthy has come under fire from several Republican members of the House for his handling of the budget talks. After Saturday’s short-term deal passed, Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds said on “Fox News Sunday” that the speaker is “in jeopardy.”
Donalds said the deal, which funds the government until November, includes no victory for Republicans. He didn’t come right out and say he’d support a motion to vacate, though.
Donalds said the compromise Democrats reached on Saturday was a victory. New York’s Democratic Party leader in the House, Hakeem Jeffries, echoed such sentiments, claiming that “MAGA Republicans” had capitulated.
