Pope Moves To Evict His ‘Enemy’ From The Vatican

Recent reports suggest that Pope Francis has developed a heightened hostility towards Cardinal Burke, despite the cardinal being a target of the pope’s scrutiny since the beginning of his pontificate. This animosity has led the pope to take drastic actions, including stripping the cardinal of his subsidized apartment and a significant monthly income.

One of the primary sources of conflict between the Pope and Cardinal Burke centers around their disagreement on a covert agreement between the Vatican and China’s Communist Party regarding the appointment of bishops in China. Cardinal Burke publicly denounced this deal, labeling it as “absolutely unconscionable.”

More recently, Cardinal Burke expressed disappointment and frustration with Pope Francis’ decision to restrict the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass. He voiced concerns on behalf of those deeply attached to this form of worship, stating that they feel disheartened and offended by the severity of the restrictions and the language used by the pope to describe them.

A major point of contention between the Pope and Cardinal Burke revolves around their disagreement concerning a clandestine agreement between the Vatican and China’s Communist Party regarding the appointment of bishops in China. Cardinal Burke’s staunch opposition to the actions of the pope marks him as the second conservative American bishop to face repercussions from Pope Francis this month. Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, was also removed by the pope for openly criticizing him.

The removal of Bishop Strickland is said to be attributed to his traditional positions that are perceived as incompatible with Pope Francis’ new direction for the Church. His steadfast defense of Catholic Church doctrine on marriage, human life, and religious freedom clashed with the pope’s perceived innovations in these areas.

Critics argue that Pope Francis’ actions reveal a selective approach to disciplining bishops, as similar measures have not been taken against bishops who have publicly contradicted Catholic doctrine on issues such as gender, homosexuality, and the ordination of women.

These recent events have prompted speculation about the pope’s leadership style, with some comparing him to an authoritarian figure who does not tolerate opposition or criticism. Historian Henry Sire even published a book titled “The Dictator Pope,” he portrays Francis as a papal tyrant who silences and replaces critics of his views.

While Pope Francis has publicly stated that he welcomes criticism and defends freedom of speech, critics argue that his actions tell a different story. Those who operate within the Church claim that “freedom of speech” under the pope’s leadership is not as it seems.
