Dormitory Dispute Turns Disturbing

In a shocking incident at New York University’s Broome Street Residence Hall, sophomore Eloni Belcher reported waking up at 5:26 a.m. on April 12 to find her roommate urinating on her. According to Belcher, the roommate appeared intoxicated during the incident, which damaged her clothing, bedding, and mattress. The two students reportedly had maintained a positive relationship prior to the event, though Belcher noted they had experienced a disagreement the day before the alleged assault.

Immediately following the incident, Belcher contacted NYU’s Department of Campus Safety, which filed a report and called the New York Police Department. However, Belcher claimed NYPD officers later dismissed her, suggesting the matter wasn’t worth waiting for police intervention. When she attempted to file her own police report, the incident was categorized as harassment rather than sexual assault.

Conflicting Claims and University Response

The accused roommate has denied Belcher’s allegations, claiming she was sleepwalking during the incident. When confronted by reporters, the roommate reportedly stated, “That’s not really my vibe, I think she’s lying,” and referred to the situation as “an ongoing case.” This contradicts Belcher’s assertion that the act was intentional and potentially motivated by their previous disagreement.

“It was horrible, I thought we were friends,” said Eloni Belcher.

NYU spokesperson John Beckman has emphasized that the university took the matter seriously, stating that student safety remains a top priority. Following the incident, Belcher was moved to different housing, though she initially reported being told temporary housing was unavailable. Beckman declined to confirm any disciplinary actions taken against either student, citing privacy laws that prevent disclosing such information.

Social Media Amplifies Campus Controversy

Frustrated with what she perceived as inadequate action from the university, Belcher took to Instagram to share her experience. Her video detailing the incident went viral, accumulating over 4 million views and drawing widespread attention to the case. In the video, Belcher called for her roommate to be moved out of their shared living space and criticized NYU’s handling of the situation.

“I’m being punished by the administration for being assaulted on campus, and that’s horrible,” added Belcher

The situation took another turn when Belcher was informed she was being investigated by NYU for posting the video. Reports also emerged alleging Belcher had engaged in online harassment toward her roommate, claims which she has denied. Belcher emphasized she refrained from retaliating physically during the incident to avoid punishment, saying, “I knew if I did anything to hurt her, even something in the moment, I would receive the brunt of the punishment.”

Ongoing Investigations and Campus Safety Concerns

The NYPD has confirmed receiving a report about the alleged incident, though the exact status of their investigation remains unclear. Belcher also filed complaints with NYU’s Office of Student Conduct, but later learned that an investigation into her case had not yet begun when she made her social media post. The incident has raised significant questions about university protocols for handling student safety concerns and serious allegations between roommates.

This case highlights ongoing debates about how universities respond to disturbing incidents in residence halls and whether proper procedures are in place to protect students while also conducting fair investigations. For many observers, the incident underscores broader concerns about campus safety policies and the challenges universities face when navigating conflicts between students in shared living environments.
