Study Finds Majority Of US Households Have Gun Owners

A recent poll found that the number of people owning firearms has increased dramatically over the last decade and that the majority of American homes had at least one gun owner.

The percentage of Americans who possess firearms, as reported in the most recent NBC News national poll (52%), is the highest it has been since the issue was initially asked in 1999.

A 2019 NBC/Wall Street Journal survey indicated that 46% of Americans, up from 42% in 2013, claimed to possess a gun, either themselves or someone in their home.

The percentage of Republicans, independents, and Democrats who own guns is fairly divided along party lines: 41% of Democrats, 66% of Republicans, and 45% of independents.

In a 2004 NBC survey, 57% of Republicans, 41% of independents, and 33% of Democrats reported having a gun owner in their family, all of which had increased over the previous 20 years.

Also, from 24% in August 2019 to 41% presently, gun ownership among Black voters has almost quadrupled, according to the study.

White voters’ rates of gun ownership have risen from 53% to 56% within the same time frame.

On the subject of gun regulation, respondents were almost equally divided: 48% are worried that the government will not regulate access to weapons adequately, while 47% are worried that authorities would go too far in restricting gun rights.

Throughout the last ten years of polling, that division has remained unchanged.

In September, President Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which he had created to further the administration’s goals on gun control.

Among these proposals are the following: the outright prohibition of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, the introduction of mandatory background checks for the purchase of firearms, the strengthening of red flag legislation, and the abolition of manufacturers’ legal immunity.

Even though Republicans have historically had more gun owners than Democrats, the poll found that more Democrats now possess firearms than in the past.

Gun ownership among Black voters has “jumped in recent years,” according to the survey, but white voters generally possess more weapons than voters of color.

According to NBC News, the poll indicated that voters had mixed feelings about government involvement in gun regulation. Half of the respondents were worried that the government wouldn’t do enough to control access to firearms, while the other half thought the government would restrict gun rights too much.
