From Biggest Donor to Political Rival
In what amounts to the most expensive case of political buyer’s remorse in history, billionaire Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party to challenge the very administration he helped elect. After contributing a staggering $250 million to pro-Trump super PACs in 2024, Musk is now launching the “America Party” in direct opposition to President Trump’s massive new spending bill.
The public feud between the two titans erupted after Musk blasted Trump’s “One, Big, Beautiful Bill,” calling it a “disgusting abomination” that would add more than $3 trillion to the national debt. After Trump fired back with threats, Musk polled his millions of followers on X, who urged him to create a new political party by a two-to-one margin.
A “One-Party System” of Waste and Graft
Musk didn’t mince words when announcing his new venture, declaring that both major parties are complicit in bankrupting the nation. “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk posted on X. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

His argument resonates with millions of fiscally responsible Americans who have watched for decades as both Republicans and Democrats have presided over an explosion in government spending and a ballooning national debt.
A Surgical Disruption Strategy
While forming a new political party is an immense challenge, Musk’s strategy appears more surgical than past third-party efforts. According to Politico, his plan is not to immediately run a candidate for president but to target a handful of vulnerable swing seats in Congress. “Given the razor-thin legislative margins,” Musk explained, “that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people.”
As campaign finance expert Brett Kappel told CBS News, the system is designed to prevent competition, and “Only the richest person in the world could make a serious effort at creating a new American political party.” While political insiders are already dismissing his chances, Musk is betting that Americans are desperate for a genuine alternative to the two-party duopoly that seems committed to spending the country into oblivion.
